Spritz Cookies are classic butter cookies that will give any holiday cookie platter an instant boost of nostalgia. Using the most fun gadget you’ll ever add to your kitchen, you’ll be pumping out dozens of these delicious little Christmas cookies in no time at all.

A variety of Spritz cookies are lined up on a large white round cookie platter.

As a kid, these were some of my very favorite cookies to make with my mom. I distinctly remember pumping out large batches of these Spritz cookies and having an absolute blast with my brother as we sprinkled the heck out of the shaped cookie dough.

The Perfect Little Butter Cookie Recipe

There are tons of butter cookie recipes out there but this one is the only one you’re ever going to need to make Spritz cookies in your home.

Dozens of Spritz cookies are lined up on a wire baking rack.

It’s my mom’s recipe – yes, the one I sat for hours as a kid making – and every single Christmas season, this recipe was one of the 4 cookie recipes we ALWAYS made.

What makes this the perfect shaped butter cookie recipe is that the consistency of the cookie dough is exactly right to be immediately pressed into to cookie shapes. And the dough holds its shape on the cookie sheets without melting into puddles in the oven.

There’s no need to chill the dough to make it taste better because, unlike so many cookie recipes, this Spritz recipe is incredibly delicious without a resting period.

Cookie Press Cookies

I’m so thrilled to have found a cookie press that works perfectly for this cookie press cookies recipe!

The cookie press was a dream to work with and I was so pleased with the results; with both the taste of the cookies and how the shapes turned out. I’ve been using this little toy for years and I’m so excited that I now get to make these cookie press cookies with Riley.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups (85 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (205 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp orange or lemon extract
  • 3 1/2 cups (475 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp table salt
  • Holiday colored sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F.
  2. Thoroughly cream butter and sugar.  Add egg, milk, vanilla and orange extract; beat well.
  3. Stir together flour and baking powder; gradually add to creamed mixture, mixing to make a smooth dough. Do not chill the dough.
  4. Place dough into cookie press and press cookies onto greased baking sheets. Sprinkle to your hearts desire!
  5. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned around edges. Remove cookies from baking sheets and cool completely on a cooling rack.

Notes

As much as you think the baking sheets should be lined with parchment paper, as almost all cookie recipes call for these days, do not line them for this recipe. You need a sticky base to press this dough onto and greasing/buttering the baking sheets will provide this.

How adorable! Looks like great spritz cookies and I shouldn’t have sold mine spritzer awhile back. Hopefully I’ll make it next year!
